My 16 year career in the Royal Australian Navy included trade studies as an Electrical Fitter followed by a degree in Electrical Engineering. I spent time as a technician working my way to the rank of Lieutenant, where I was responsible for managing the workforce I was once a part of. I also served a Tour of Duty in Iraq in 2003 on board the HMAS SYDNEY as the Assistant Weapons Electrical Engineer Officer (AWEEO) and Boarding Officer.
How is all of this this relevant to my new role at Options Consulting Group?
Asset management and preventative maintenance in a combat zone is critical. Failure of ships systems designed to navigate, seek out targets and engage the enemy can have severe consequences. Whilst I didn’t know it at the time, this is was my first introduction to LEAN principles.
Following my resignation from the Navy, I found my skills and knowledge were transferable to the Manufacturing Industry, specifically to Engineering Management roles and then ultimately to Operations and Plant Management.
My first role outside of the Navy was in heavy engineering followed by a role as Engineering Manager for one of Australia’s largest aluminium extrusion manufacturers. These roles emphasised the commercial importance of good engineering disciplines to a profit generating business.
Once grounded in the commercial manufacturing space, I spent 6 years working for a global glass container manufacturer leading Engineering and Operations across two major plants in Brisbane and Melbourne. This company is heavily invested in LEAN, so I completed a number of successful money saving projects utilising the Green Belt in LEAN Six Sigma qualification they afforded me.
My most recent appointment prior to consulting for OCG, was Operations Manager in the high speed/high volume labels printing industry. The company produces printed labels and cartons for the pharmaceutical, food and healthcare industries. Developing a new S&OP process was a defining achievement in this role as it required significant change management and well developed strategic communication skills to engage the team.
Having such broad exposure to a number of industries means I can speak your language, understand your drivers and assist you to find the right solution to your requirements. I look forward to working with you.
