Delegation is a relational process which should empower and encourage staff while giving clear direction to enable employees to achieve outcomes efficiently and with improving quality through innovation. Conducting regular performance reviews is a fundamental management tool and leadership role which requires trusting relationships, regular feedback and subsequent coaching. While formal performance management relies on a prescribed cycle, informal conversations taking place in a healthy Team Leader–Team Member relationship as part of day-to-day interactions are also crucial. The coaching framework taught in the ‘Leader as Coach’ workshop is a useful foundation for having these conversations.
