In November 2013 the ABS found that 9% of the workforce considered themselves to be independent contractors and in 2015 it has been estimated that 35% of Australia’s workforce is employed on a casual or contract basis.  Independent research firm Edelman Berland found that in 2014, 34% of the American workforce freelanced at some stage and Intuit and Emergent have estimated that by 2020, 40% of the American workforce will be contingent.
