Top 10 Tips for Candidates Undergoing Recruitment Assessments

Profile Assessment is a feature of today’s recruitment process whether you’re applying directly via in-house recruiters or your application is being managed by outsourced recruitment professionals appointed to act on behalf of the employer.

These assessments are usually completed online and can involve answering numerous questions within time limits and for some candidates, this process may cause an initial level of uncertainty or anxiety.

  1. Keep in mind the recruitment assessments aren’t out to get you, they are just a snapshot and usually provide insights to your personality, skill, preferences and tendencies.
  2. Check what software or device you can do your tests on. Some may not be compatible with mobile devices or they might need a plugin downloaded.
  3. Ensure you are in a quiet place, free from distractions, before you commence any assessments.
  4. Allow plenty of time for your test/s; if you are heading into a branch or office – allow plenty of travelling time.
  5. Remain calm and relaxed so you are clear-headed and can focus.
  6. Read the introductory instructions at the beginning of the test thoroughly; they will give you a steer on what’s expected and how to answer the questions.
  7. Read each question carefully before answering.
  8. Assessments are usually timed; keep an eye on the counter and do not dwell on one question for too long. If you can’t complete it, skip on to the next one.
  9. If you want to brush up on core literacy and numeracy skills, try out some word or number based puzzles.
  10. Remember, assessments are a great way of looking at transferable skills – they are not designed to make the choice of whether you’re a good or bad candidate. They will assist the recruitment professional better understand your capabilities and facilitate you being placed in the best suited role.
